FertilityTests For Women

Infertilityis a condition when a woman intends to become a mother but hasfailed, despite frequent unprotected sex for more than a year. Infertility hasbeen one of the biggest problems for women since a long time. New treatmentsare evolving every day and latest techniques are now available to deal withthis problem.

Firstand foremost, you need to know how "fertile" you are and what are thechances of conceiving. Incidiently, you also need to keep track of yourmenstrual cycle as it plays an important role in conception. Studying theovulation pattern provides some vital clues about any disorders that may exist.

Ifa woman has not been able to get pregnant after trying for a long period oftime, it becomes important to see a doctor who could recommend a series of fertility tests inorder to better define and identify any underlying adverse condition.

Whatare the fertility tests for women?

Whenyou plan to conceive, one of the important steps is to have an evaluation ofthe sexual health and whether the reproductive organs which include the uterus,Fallopian tubes and ovaries are in a healthy and functioning state. You couldbe suggested to undergo various procedures to detect the health of theseorgans. Some of the usual tests are

Hysterosalpingogram– This is also known as tubogram. These are a sequence of x-rays of the uterusand Fallopian tubes. A dye (liquid form) is injected via the vagina. Analternative method includes using air or saline in place of dye, and then anultrasound scan is done. This test helps in knowing if there is a blockage inthe Fallopian tubes or if there is an issue with the uterus and is usuallyperformed between the 6th and 12th day after the menstrual period.

Transvaginalultrasound – Alsocalled endovaginal ultrasound. This is a type of ultrasound test that usessound waves of high frequency to generate images and is helpful in examiningthe internal organs, the uterus, Fallopian tubes, ovaries, and vagina. Thistype of testing involves inserting a probe into the vaginal canal. It is unlikeother ultrasounds where the transducer rests on the external parts.

Hysteroscopy– This is a type of procedure that helps to investigate the inside of theuterus to diagnose and treat any underlying abnormal condition of the uterussuch as abnormal bleeding. Firstly, the cervix is dilated to allow insertion ofthe hysteroscope, a thin, illuminated tube. It is then introduced into thevagina and passed through the cervix to the uterus.

Laparoscopy:Small slits are made on the abdomen to introduce instruments, which include acamera that helps survey the pelvis and diagnose problems like endometriosis.

Otherfertility tests:

Inaddition to all the above tests, doctors might recommend going throughdifferent tests to better diagnose fertility problems. Some of them are

•Hormones such as FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone), LH, Progrestrone,Prolactin, AMH etc. - These are responsible for the growth and development ofeggs in the ovaries and also for carrying out other functions in the process ofconception. Imbalance in the levels of these hormones could indicate adecreased fertility rate. .

•Pap smear is usually done to identify if there are any changes in the cellswithin the cervix which could be causing conditions that can interfere withfertility in women.

•Screening for sexually transmitted diseases also has now become an integralpart of prenatal testing as these diseases are also among the major causes thataffect fertility.

Noproblem is too grave to find a cure. It only needs determination andperseverance to deal with the issues and succeed. If you are suspicious ofinfertility, let it not push you towards depression and frustration. Rememberthat no one is singled out, there are many couples with this problem. You justneed the right advice at the right time by the right doctor
