Whenis someone said to be infertile?

Inabilityto achieve pregnancy even after one year of unprotected intercourse is calledinfertility. One in every 7 couples experiences infertility at some point intheir life. To understand why couples end up with infertility, one shouldunderstand the process of conception or how conception naturally occurs.

Thefemale reproductive system consists of two ovaries that are connected viafallopian tubes to the uterus. Below the uterus is the vagina from where thesperm travels up. Either of the ovaries releases an egg once in 30 days, whichmust be roll into the fallopian tube. The sperm received from the partner, travels through the vagina, into theuterus, and up into the fallopian tube to fertilize the egg. Fertilizationusually takes place in the fallopian tube and the fertilized egg, or embryo, travels down into the uterus, where it implants in the uterine lining orendometrium and subsequently develops into a baby. Any disturbance thatdevelops in any part of this process can lead to infertility.

Thereare multiple factors responsible for causing a disturbance in the process ofconception. There could be a female factor or a male factor that is responsiblefor infertility. Let us have a brief insight into the fertility factors.

Identifythe cause !!.. Know the fertility factors:

TheOvulation Factor

OvulationProblems are the most common causes of infertility, and approximately 25% ofall infertility cases account from ovulatory disorders. Ovulation involves therelease of a mature egg from one of the ovaries. After ovulation and around 12to 16 days before menstruation begins, preparation of the lining of uterusoccurs creating an optimal environment for implantation and nurturing of thefertilized egg. If there are regular menstrual cycles, there must be ovulation.Cycle lengths of approximately 24 to 34 days are usually ovulatory. If theperiod cycle happens every few months or not at all, the cycle must beanovulatory or infrequent ovulation.

TheTubal Factor

Patencyof the fallopian tubes is very important for fertilisation to occur. Therecould be blockage of tubes in a few women which could interfere with thefertilisation of the ovum. A special scan done to identify the patency of tubesis called a hysterosalpingogram, in which a dye is injected before the scan andpatency of the tubes is verified by the extent of the dye penetration along thefallopian tubes.

TheAge Factor

Didsomeone look at an actress giving birth to a child at late 30s or 40s and hadplanned for successful conception by fixing a specific time period? It’s noteasy for all. Everyone’s body is designed in a specific way and the biologicalclock never follows social needs.

Delayingof pregnancy is a common choice among couples in the current generation. Themost commonly reason among couples for delaying conception is priorities forstudy, career and financial security. Fertility declines with age, especiallyfrom the mid-30s, as fewer eggs remain in the ovaries, and the quality of theeggs remaining is lower than when younger. Some women experience a decline infertility in their late 20s.

Testsare now available to determine your ovarian reserve, which reflect age-relatedfertility potential. In these tests, the hormones follicle-stimulating hormone(FSH) and AMH are tested in the blood on the second, third, or fourth day of amenstrual period. An elevated FSH level indicates that chances for pregnancymay be lower than routinely expected at that specific age, especially if 35years or older. Despite having multiple successful options for conceptionat a later age, one must know that age is an important factor for fertility.

Malefactor

Thereis every chance of men being infertile along with women. Generally, peopleassume that infertility is more common in women, but that is not really true.40% to 45% of the total causes of infertility is contributed to men.

Asemen analysis that reveals the quality, volume, morphology, motility and countof sperms is performed to assess infertility in men. There could be disorders that affect the components investigated in semenanalysis, like hormonal or genetic issues or the presence of a varicocele etc.

Peritonealand uterine/cervical factor

Thelining around various organs of the body for helping with their physiologicalmovement is called the peritoneum. Sometimes, there could be a disruption ortrauma to the peritoneum that causes adhesion of adjacent organs. One suchconsequence is a pelvic adhesion which prevents the implantation of the embryointo the uterus. These adhesions are detected using an ultrasound scan. Theyoften go undetected and might contribute to infertility.

Anothersuch morphological abnormality could be with the cervix, the lowermost part ofthe uterus. Issues with a cervix are generally due to any infections, geneticor hormonal. The hysterosalpingogram used for analysing the patency of thefallopian tubes also detects any abnormalities with uterus and cervix.

Psychologicaland hereditary factor

Infertilityis as much an emotional aspect as it is a biological one. Emotional factorslike stress, anxiety, lifestyle and diet associated with the couple may negatively influence thereproductive health. There exists evidence linking the effects of mental healthwith infertility. Although there is also the existence of numerous solutionsfor the same, learning the hard way isn’t advised. It’s never too late for achange.

Hereditarycomponent is also a cause in many disorders including infertility. There arevarious gynaecological issues in women and infertility issues in men associatedwith genetic makeup. There exist numerous other factors related to infertility.Sometimes it’s easy to detect and treat the cause of infertility and sometimesit may be hard to identify the specific cause.

GarbhaGudihas the clinicians, experts and the technology to evaluate every possibledimension of the cause of infertility and treat the same.
