A device put in vehicles to capture information on auto accidents or crashes is called an event data recorder, or EDR. The enhanced version of the event data recorder (EDR) known as the video event data recorder (VEDR) now includes video recording of the vicinity of the vehicle. In the case of an accident, these devices store the video feed before and after. Along with GPS data, it also logs the vehicle's speed and acceleration. Typically, a GPS unit and a specific feature camera are mounted to a Video Event Data Recorder that is put on the windshield of the vehicle. Video Event Data Recorder are installed in a variety of vehicles, including coaches and buses, commercial vehicles, emergency services vehicles, law enforcement vehicles, and vehicles used to transport hazardous materials.
