Alterations: Make Your wedding Dress Fit Perfectly

It was made for you!' Look The last thing you want to worry about on your wedding day is tripping over a hem that's too long or constantly tugging at that sliding bodice trying to protect your modesty, that's it. That's why making your change is such a necessity.

Depending on your timing the first fitting is done around two months before the wedding. It's important not to book your first fitting too early otherwise you could end up with a dress that doesn't fit, especially if you're losing weight. On the other hand leave it too late and there is a possibility that there will not be enough time to carry out all the changes required.

Wedding dresses can be very intricate, so it is advisable to use the services of a professional and specialized tailor or tailor to get the job done. A good bridal shop will be able to guide you in the right direction of finding someone to make sure you're the right fit on your big day.

It is important that you have chosen your wedding lingerie and bridal shoes before attending your first fitting. You have to carry these with you and wear them with your dress. A padded bra, boned basque or body stocking can make a big difference in the shape and look of the top half of your bridal gown. The heel height of the shoes you'll be wearing that day will be the deciding factor on how much you need to hem or 'lift' the dress.

If you are wearing a hoop or underskirt this will also need to be worn with your fitting as it will rise up and change the overall shape of the skirt. You can also bring your other items to try. This gives you an opportunity to see what it will all look like together on the day.

Once they see you in your bridal gown, your seamstress will discuss with you what work is needed. The work and time involved is up to you and your outfit. You might want to add or remove sleeves, change the shape of the neckline, or add some more bead work. It may possibly need to be taken in, taken out, or have minor adjustments in length. This can vary in terms of price, but most seamstresses will provide you with a guide price before starting work. A bridal gown with multiple layers of skirt and lots of intricate lace and beadwork will be more expensive than a plain gown because of the amount of time it will take to alter.

If your gown has a train, most brides will have a loop or button attached to it to enable you to move or lift the train later in the day. This is usually done just before your first dance (to prevent the groom from falling all over it!) and is often a bit tricky so we'd suggest taking a bride or her mother along for the final fitting. The seamstress will show them how to do it and you can see how it looks and feels.

When you go back for your final fitting, which is usually about a week or two before the wedding, remember to take your shoes and lingerie with you again. This will give you and the seamstress a complete picture of how the finished article will look and feel. Sometimes a little more tweaking may be needed, especially if you did a lot of work in the beginning.
