Although there is a continuum of situations from molecules to the solid state between small clusters defined by molecular orbitals and larger nanoparticles defined by energy band structures, small nanoparticles are typically referred to as nanoclusters or, for those smaller than one nm, subnanoclusters. The quantity of metal atoms, the kind of ligands, and the dispersity of these distinct types vary. The term "cluster" or "nanocluster" is used to refer to mixtures of more or less polydisperse large nanoclusters that are defined by the histogram revealed by transmission electron microscopy measurement, while the term "nanoparticles" is used for mixtures of molecularly precise polymetallic molecules with ligands for which the X-ray crystal structure is known.
