For moderate to severe inflammatory acne marked by papules, pustules, nodules, and cysts, oral antibiotics are helpful. If acne is present on the face and trunk as well as other areas, they are also helpful. To avoid antibiotic resistance, oral antibiotics should not be administered along with a topical Acne Medication, but rather with a topical benzoyl peroxide cleaner or cream. It is advised to keep courses between three and six months long to reduce the possibility of antibiotic resistance and side effects.
First-line oral antibiotic therapy is doxycycline 50-100 mg daily or minocycline 50-100 mg daily. Due to their harmful effects on foetal bone development, these medications should not be administered to anybody under the age of 10 or women who are pregnant or trying to get pregnant. Children under the age of 10 should also not be administered Acne Medication.
Both the possibility of female vaginal candidiasis and gastrointestinal side effects should be discussed with patients. When taking doxycycline, some patients may experience photosensitivity. Long-term use of minocycline may cause irregular pigmentation and a rare medication reaction resembling lupus. Due to the possibility of developing benign intracranial hypertension, these oral antibiotics shouldn't be taken with oral retinoids.
