About CAT
Common Admission Test (CAT) is
one of the premier Management Entrance exams. It is conducted by the IIMs.
Prestigious IIMs are considered to be one of the Best Institutes in India to
pursuean MBA. As of now there are 20 IIMs in India located in Ahmedabad,
Bengaluru, Kolkata, Lucknow, Kozhikode, Indore, Shillong, Ranchi, Raipur,
Rohtak, Tiriuchirappalli, Udaipur, Kashipur, Bodh Gaya, Amritsar,
Vishakhapatnam, Sambalpur, Sirmaur, Nagpur and Jammu. Apart from the IIMs,
there are several other Top B schools as well in India like MDI Gurgaon, IMT
Ghaziabad, TAPMI Manipal etc. who accept CAT scores for admission. More than 2
Lakhs students take the CAT test every year for admission in IIMs which has
1500+ seats and in the other Top colleges which has around 2000 seats.
Test Pattern
CAT originally started as a
paper pencil (Offline) Test but has joined the digital bandwagon and has become
online Test in the past few years. In the present pattern, there are 100
Questions in CAT to be answered in 180 minutes divided into three sections.
These sections are Verbal Ability, Quantitative Aptitude & Data
Interpretation and Logical Reasoning having 34, 34 & 32 Questions
respectively. Each of these sections have a Sectional Constraint bound by time
which means one can work on a particular section for only 60 minutes.
Verbal Ability: This
section aims to check the competence of an aspirant on English. Skills The main
areas to be studied here are Vocabulary, Grammar & Reading Comprehension.
Quantitative Aptitude: This section aims to check the competence of
an aspirant in the area of fundamental Mathematics. The main areas to be
studied here are Number System, Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Logarithms,
Permutation & Combination, Probability, Functions etc.
Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning: This section aims to
check the competence of an aspirant in the areas of calculative ability &
Thought process. The main areas to be studied here is Pictorial representation
of Data & Analytical & Logical Reasoning. Majority of questions in CAT
are MCQs but there are certain questions where the answer has to be keyed in.
An aspirant fetched 3 marks for every correct answer but there is a negative
marking of -1 for every incorrect answer. However, for the non MCQs answer
there is no negative marking.
