Unlike granite and marble, quartz worktops are created from an engineered material that consists of around 90% natural quartz grains and 10% polymers, resins, and pigments. Materials Used in Quartz Countertops
Quartz makes up 94% of the material, which is combined with polyester resin and pigments to create a pleasing colour. To create new patterns, tiny flecks of metallic or glass are incorporated into the mixture. The resins serve to bind the mixture and aid in making the counters scratch- and stain-resistant as well as nonporous, preventing the need for sealing. Natural quartz crystals are mined, ground into a powder or aggregate, then fused with poly resin binders and color-imparting pigments under high heat and pressure to create a solid slab.
