TrimethyloPropane (TMP) is used in the energy sector to lessen foaming in coal-fired power plants. In order to provide a well-mixed fuel that decreases foam formation during the combustion process, trimethylol propane (TMP) is employed.

The chemical trimethylolpropane (TMP) has the formula CH3CH2C(CH2OH)3. The triol in this colourless solid has three hydroxyl functional groups. Trimethylolpropane has a quaternary mole structure and three main hydroxyl groups. It is a hot, molten version of a white, crystalline solid or transparent liquid. It has a 57 C melting temperature. Hydrocarbon solvents are insoluble in it, although it is soluble in water, alcohol, and glycerin. It is made through the aldehyde hydrogenation reaction ( n-butyraldehyde and formaldehyde).

In the polymer industry, Trimethylolpropane (TMP) is a common building element. TMP is primarily used as an ingredient in alkyd resins. Ethoxylated and propoxylated TMP, derived condensation of TMP and the epoxides, are used for manufacturing of flexible polyurethanes. Otherwise, acrylated and alkoxylated TMP's are employed as multifunctional monomers to produce diverse coatings. Its derivatives serve as building blocks for ion exchange resins and high-gloss coatings. Additionally, lubricating oils and glues are made with it.
