Cubicle workplaces are rigid because they confine employees to their designated workspaces. This is unfortunate because different types of venues are required to hold private conversations, cooperate with coworkers, and meet with clients and business partners. Instead, office space needs to be constructed to accommodate the changing requirements of company. Businesses must design workplaces that take into account the need for private phone calls, the need to communicate and host clients and vendors, and the fact that new team members need to be close to coworkers who will be involved in their day-to-day operations.

Depending on what they are working on, some employees need stillness to concentrate while others need loud music to keep them motivated. The traditional office layout, however, does not accommodate these needs because those who require silence are constantly asked to be quiet, those who require music are constantly asked to be quiet, and meeting rooms are reserved for group activities rather than individual ones, making them unavailable to those who require them. Others require a traditional seated desk in order to be productive, while some workers flourish in an open stand-up desk setting. A range of locations that are readily available and are suited to each of these needs are required to support a diverse set of people.
