Bioengineered Food
Bioengineered Food are ones that "contain detectable genetic material that has been transformed through particular lab techniques and cannot be created by normal breeding or found in nature," according to the National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard. A portion of the newly introduced DNA must be present in a bioengineered food or product. According to the FDA, humans have been selectively breeding and cross-breeding plants and animals for thousands of years to produce offspring with more favoured qualities. In order to express desirable qualities in plants, such as a longer shelf life, a better vitamin content, or disease resistance, biologists have used genetic engineering since the 1980s.
