Desmoid Tumors, also known as aggressive fibromatosis, are rare tumors that arise from connective tissue cells. They are considered to be a type of soft tissue sarcoma, which means they can grow aggressively and invade surrounding tissue. Desmoid tumors can occur in any part of the body but are most commonly found in the abdominal wall, the shoulders, the hips, and the thighs. They can also occur in the head and neck region and in the extremities.
Desmoid Tumors are not cancerous, but they can be locally aggressive and cause significant morbidity due to their size and location. The tumors can grow slowly over time and are often asymptomatic. However, as they grow, they can cause pain, discomfort, and functional impairment. In some cases, they can also cause nerve damage or impinge on vital structures such as blood vessels or organs.
