Rutile has recently been the focus of important research in order to be used as a viable oxide for applications in photocatalysis and magnetic attraction. It is a large band-hole semiconductor. Little amounts of synthesised rutile are typically used in research projects rather than inferred materials from mineral stores.
In 1948, the first synthetic Rutile was produced and marketed under various names. Ilmenite can deliver titanium mineral through the Becher process. Pure synthetic rutile is simple and essentially grey, with a small amount of yellow. Different colours of engineered rutile doping should be possible. High refractive index results in completely unbreakable brilliance and solid refraction that provides the illusion of a valuable stone. The dull alternative to precious stones is marketed under the outdated compound name "Titania" for this oxide. Rutile is only moderately hard (about a 6 on the Mohs scale), yet it is occasionally used in jewellery because it is scratch-safe.
