Finishing Setup
Jointing is needed to eliminate unsightly random cracks. Contraction joints are constructed with a hand groover or by inserting strips of plastic, wood, metal, or preformed combined material into the unhardened concrete.

After joining the concrete, it should be paddled with a wood or metal hand float or with a finishing machine operating float blades. These implants aggregate particles just under the surface; remove slight marks, humps, and voids; and compact the mortar at the character in practice for further finishing processes.

Where a soft, hard, thick surface is desired, floating should be observed by steel troweling. Troweling should not be accomplished on a texture that has not been washed; troweling after only bull-floating is not a satisfactory finish process. A slip-resistant surface can be made by brooming before the concrete has comprehensively hardened, but it should be adequately hard to retain the scoring appearance.
